Today felt like a big step forward — not just in making dog tags, but in turning them into something smart.
If you’ve been following this 30-day journey, you’ve seen me sketch designs, tangle paracord, and wrestle with my printer… but now we’re diving into the real magic: NFC technology.
And it actually worked!
Wait… What is an NFC Tag?
In simple terms, NFC stands for Near Field Communication — it’s the same tech your phone uses for tap-to-pay or digital keys.
So when I embed an NFC chip into a dog tag, it means:
You can tap your phone to the tag
A link with your dog’s info opens instantly
No need for apps or scanning QR codes
It even works when your dog’s bouncing around like crazy
It’s like a tiny portal tucked into a tag — but make it cute.
Why Use NFC for Dog Tags?
Let’s be real: traditional dog tags can wear out, get scratched, or be hard to read.
And microchips? Super useful — but only if your dog ends up at a vet or shelter with a scanner.
With NFC, anyone with a smartphone can instantly pull up:
Your contact info
Medical notes (like allergies or meds)
A cute photo
Or even a link to their Instagram — because yes, some of us are those pet parents
It’s peace of mind, made smarter.
What I Did Today
I filmed a quick demo — holding my phone over the tag and showing how it works. No apps. No weird steps. Just a simple tap.
I also tested a few different phones, and it worked on almost all of them.(The only trick is some older phones need NFC turned on manually, but most have it enabled by default.)
And can I just say? Watching the info pop up in real-time was a very satisfying moment. It made all the little struggles — with measurements, formatting, and setup — totally worth it.

Launching June 1st on Etsy!
These summer-colored NFC dog tags will be part of our June 1st shop launch. They’re lightweight, 3D printed, customizable, and now… smarter than ever.
If you want your pup to be both safe and stylish this summer, I think you’re going to love them.
Thanks for following along on this journey! Tomorrow — I’ll be diving into packaging ideas and figuring out how to make these little tags feel extra special when they arrive at your doorstep.
See you for Day 7 💛
